Lens Test Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM vs the Non-IS at 200mm and Closest Focus

Lens Test Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM vs the Non-IS at 200mm and Closest Focus

Key limitations to this lens test:

This test examines single copies of the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM and EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM on one Rebel XSi body. Results may differ with different copies of same kinds of photographic equipment, and maybe even more so with the same type of lens on a different model of camera body.

This test examines images taken at the maximum focal length, 200mm, for each lens. Results may differ at smaller focal lengths. Indeed, most zoom lenses appear to have an optimal focal length that has maximum sharpness, though this appears to be better controlled in pro-quality glass. This test also examines images taken at the minimum focus distance, 1.2m. Result may differ at longer focus distances. As with focal length, most lenses seem to have an optimum focus distance, at which point image clarity slowly softens at longer focus distances. The optimal distance specific to a given lens is likely related at least roughly to the minimum focus distance (and, as a result, roughly to focal length).

In essence, by looking at maximum zoom and minimum focus distance, this test examines the performance of these lenses at two extremes. This makes for a fairly challenging test. A high-contrast subject was also used in this test, adding a further challenge.

The test is primarily directed at image sharpness.

The test subject is an ink drawing done on stiff Bristol board. Ink tends to bleed into the paper a little, rending the line edges a tad fuzzy. The paper also has a somewhat grainy texture. Keep these realities in mind when looking at the image crops. The drawing in question are details from the compass from a stylized map; tree leaves mark the compass points.

Methods:

The camera body was mounted on a heavy tripod. A 10-second timer was used for each shot. All photos were taken at the maximum resolution of 12.2MP and were initially stored in JPEG format (e.g. not raw). ISO 100 was used. Photos were taken indoors under relatively bright artificial light (1/60 shutter speed at f/4). All images were underexposed by -1/3 stop to prevent over-exposure of bright areas. Center-weighted average metering was used. The ink drawing was mounted flat, and care was taken to make sure that the lens orientation (and the attendant focal plane) was parallel to the image plane.

Three series of images were taken, with the focus being re-established for each series. Focus was established manually using the camera’s “pass-through” ability, with the image on the screen magnified to 10x. A test shot was done at f/8 to confirm sharpness, before beginning a given series. For the final composites, and therefore comparison, the sharpest series for each lens was used.

Each series consisted of photos taken at full-stop intervals starting with the widest aperture: f/4, f/5.6, f/8 and f/11.

For the image-stabilized lens, IS was switched off.

From the final image series for each lens: Two 3x3” crops at 72 dpi were extracted from each photo (essentially a 3x3” square at 100% zoom). One series of crops show the image center, and the other series the lower right corner. Photoshop was used for these tasks, and final compositing.

Notes:

The IS version of the 70-200mm f/4L is slightly longer than the non-IS version, one of several indicators that these two lenses are markedly different despite similar-looking cosmetics. The minimum focus distance of the IS lens was a tad further than its non-IS sister, approximately by a centimeter (maybe slightly less). Correspondingly, the angle of view for the IS lens was slightly wider at 200mm and closest focus when compared the non-IS lens. These differences are very minor, only showing up in a sensitive test such as this, and would not be noticed in the field.

Results:

Image center: Both lenses perform remarkably well at all f-stops, and much fine detail can be seen in each 3x3” frame, including the granularity of the paper. Both lenses at f/4, f/5.6 and f/8 are very close. Both lenses suffer from some spherical aberration at f/4, which tends to wash out the contrast somewhat. Interestingly, after spending way too much time focusing these lenses for this test, it appears that at f/4 there is a trade-off between maximum contrast and sharpness: Contrast can be boosted to about the same level seen in f/5.6, but with some loss of sharpness. When maximum sharpness is attained, the contrast is reduced due to the observed washout from spherical aberration.

Careful examination reveals a slight edge in sharpness for the IS version of the lens for all tested f-numbers, especially at f/11.

Image corner: Both lenses show some degradation in these corner crops. However, corner sharpness at all tested f-stops is noticeably sharper with the IS lens when weighed against the non-IS. Compare the image corners at f/8 to the image centers at the same f-stop to get an idea the difference in corner sharpness for each lens. Note that these images were made with a 1.6 crop-factor camera: Full-forma

Object of Deborah Hill, hair stylist and salon proprietress, Berlin. Her comment:
“I got my start by giving myself a start.” – The quote and portrait refer to a role model of Deborah Hill’s: C. J. Walker (born 1867) was one of the first free African American women to set up a successful business of their own. She traded in hair care and cosmetic products and inspired black women regarding their professional perspectives. Deborah Hill would second her claim that success is based on perseverance, hard work, trust in oneself and God, as well as honourable business terms and, of course, good products.

Personal background of Deborah Hill, International Hair Design:
Deborah Hill’s hairdressing salon is located in busy Potsdamer Strasse in Berlin’s Schoneberg district. The proprietress estimates this location’s proximity to her clientele very highly.
Deborah Hill moved to Berlin in 1988 from Philadelphia/USA at the age of 40. She already knew the city from previous visits paid relatives there and, as a trained hair stylist, had by this time been able to gather experiences in this trade. Part of the start-up capital was provided by her mother from the United States. Looking back at her decision to set up her own business, which she has not regretted to this day, she says: “God spoke to me – this shop is for me.” By now she employs two young hair stylists on an hourly basis.
Besides the usual service range one would expect in a hairdressing salon, Deborah has specialized in providing care for Afro-textured hair. Her customer base hence particularly includes African and Afro-American Berlin residents. In the future she also plans to augment her existing range with wellness services.

My Sister and Pete's Wedding

My Sister and Pete's Wedding

My sister is absolutely beautiful. And one could argue that the dress, the hair do, the makeup, her amazingly warm and thoughtful heart really makes her that beautiful... but I am going to let you in on a secret. There's something that sets this moment apart from her usual and perpetual beauty, something that's far more powerful yet simple than the love she spreads around to whomever she can reach out to: happiness.

I have known my sister before we were both even born. We were probably eggs back then in our mother, but she was that one egg that kept looking out for all the others. She made sure that every other egg was happy, and knew what was going on. I'm sure that when it was her turn to become the beautiful person that she is today, she gave me a reassuring nod that everything would be ok. And it would be, because of her. Yes, super strange egg story, but let's continue =)

Since I was born, my sister has been there for me. I lived a very spoiled life, and still do! She has been my role model, my inspiration, and my sister, the best sister ever. She's taken care of me beyond anything I could even imagine. Even through her shouting and yelling at me whenever I turned her "My Little Ponies" into my Gi-Joe's warhorses, and when I snuck into her room to look at all her cool stuff when she wasn't home, she always took care of me.

And it wasn't only me, everyone she met was touched by her kindness. She also attracted the most awesome friends ever, and with them they became successful in their own ways, but the closeness and unconditional care for each other always makes me look on with awe. Her friends and our family were there for my sister as much as she was there for us, but she has always been incredibly independent and strong.

I remember when she wanted to scan negative prints of her film camera into our computer at home. She struggled with it for hours and hours, and when I came home she had given up. It was a simple and trivial thing, but when she saw me she smiled and went to her room. My mom told me she had been trying to do something with the computer all day, and said I should go help her. I realized what she was trying to do, and at that point, I felt sad that she wasn't able to do it for so long, never asked for help, and now that it didn't work out, she was able to calmly go on to something else. Me? I would've asked for help within 10 seconds of something not working, I would've screamed and shouted. But she was strong.

When she got into college, it was all her. My parents didn't even know she was at the age for college. I remember the morning when she went to my parent's room, and I was able to her. She announced that she was going to a college called "Columbia." My dad said, "South America? College already?" My sister had applied and gotten into one of the world's best colleges, all on her own. The frustration, stress, and everything she took on herself. I couldn't be any prouder than that. My parents were amazed. She got as many scholarships as possible to pay for it, and she made the most out of her education. I never heard a single complaint from her through anything.

After graduating undergrad, she went on to Boalt Law School, and while there she met Pete.

The only times I see my sister stress out, is when she's trying to figure out something for me (like college apps), or if she's trying to help parents or friends out with something. When she went to Law School, that was the first time I saw her stress about something for herself. Studying and all that was hard on her.

When she graduated, she went on to a huge law firm in San Francisco. She quickly took on big cases, one noteable one took place in Los Angeles. I went to visit her one day, since LA was pretty close to my college (UC Santa Barbara, go gauchos!), and expected to see my usual friendly sister, who went way out of her way to make me happy. She was the one person I could turn to, no matter what, to make me smile. But when I saw her, I was scared. She was stressed, she couldn't smile, and she was frustrated at everything. Never did I ever think or even expect the world to come to a point where she was beyond calming herself down.

I didn't know what to say or do.

It was around 9:30pm, and she just had a 14 hour work day (or so). Her company gave her a really nicely furnished temporary apartment while she was working on the case in LA. I was just gonna hangout and crash with her over the weekend since I wanted to be wherever my sister was. Heck, I was even planning to goto Law School myself, so why not try to shadow her?

By that time, Pete was already with my sister, and he had come down to LA to visit her as well. I wondered if he was just there to hangout as well. I liked Pete, but I didn't know exactly why yet, it was just a feeling.

The whole day while my sister was at work, and while I was waiting for her to get back to her apartment, me and

How Should a Muslim Lady Dress ?

The non-Muslims encourage the exposure and exhibition of the female body regarding it as a great art. Public displays of female bodies in magazines like Vogue are considered artistic developments. Careers like modelling, acting, singing and dancing is short cuts for women to become famous and rich. They design clothes for fashion, which hints at the femininity of the woman and emphasises her figure. In other words, a non-Muslim woman should be dressed to kill at all times. Perfume and makeup should be her constant companions. She is dolled up to attract the attention of the people around her so that she can be noticed, admired and desired.

Islam on the other hand commands a woman to cover herself completely so that she does not attract any attention. The Quran states in Surah Ahzaab verse 59 "… O Nabi! Say to the believing women to draw over them their outer garments (or cloaks) so that they be recognised and not molested." Rasulullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam says in a sahih Hadith, "Shame is a branch of Imaan." Rasulullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam said that, 'A lady who dresses and perfumes herself with the intention of creating interest in men is according to the Shariah an adulteress and she will be punished on the day of judgement for committing adultery or zina.' All the prophets’ woman folk used to put on the outer cloaks, which are called Burqah or jilbab. The Quranic verses and the prophet’s Ahaadith apply to all Muslims regardless of the generation they are born in not only for the times of the prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam. The outer cloaks is of dull colour and extremely loose so that the Muslim lady is fully covered from head to toe and does not draw any attention femininity when she is outdoors. However, she can dress as she pleases for her husband indoors.

The kuffaar say that Islam has enslaved its women by enforcing them to stay in their homes and cover themselves when they come out. How very wrong they are! What have the kuffaar given their women; prizes for displaying their bodies and exposing them to the risk of rape and molestation. Insecurity of losing their husbands to beautiful mistresses. Constant battle with nature to look young and pretty enough to keep your man with you! On the contrary, Islam elevates its women to the peak of respect and saves a woman from disgrace and humiliation, giving her a chance to be treated like an honourable human being and not a mere sex object for the lustful desires of bestial miscreants.

No doubt, we can adopt from the kuffar beneficial technology but should not be led into believing that their culture is better than ours is because it is definitely not! So when the kuffaar and the unfortunately misled Muslims laugh at the covered Muslims ladies, calling them backward and fanatical, we can educate them on the advantage of covering ourselves. Not only will he gain true satisfaction and peace of heart by following the truth, but we will also gain the pleasure of our Rabb who in turn he will reward us very handsomely for not forgetting the teachings of Islam, even after fifteen centuries after Rasulullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam death.

All the innocent Muslims who have strayed from the commands of Islam should know that the kuffar also lose their respect for us when they see us abandoning our culture and fumbling like sheep trying hard to make ourselves at home in their alien and immoral society. Allah says in surah Asr…. "By the time man is in loss, except those who believe". Just when will he start believing and prevent himself from incurring more loss and ruin? Rasulullah sallallahu alaihe wasallam has said, "He who imitates a nation will be raised with the kufar and be thrown into the depths of hell with them?

I hope that with this article Muslim women will he able to decide for themselves what sort of life they want in this world, and how they want to be treated on the day of judgement.
